This simpe, attractive Rounded Edges Chair is by Montreal-based industrial designer David Raymond. It's made of three 1/4"-thick aluminum pieces that are riveted together.
It's funny what a difference color makes; I find the pale green version striking, while the natural aluminum version leaves me a bit cold.
Raymond opened his studio, LESORR (Les Objets Raymond Raymond) just last year. He's self-producing the Rounded Edges Chair, making them to order.

The groove in the middle could be used to secure a (made to fit) cushion. A cushion would prevent the rivits in people's jeans from damaging the powder coat.
Plus combining that with a rigid lip on the rear of the cushion would mostly lock it in position.
Would have been better out of one piece. Ok you would increase the production cost but the offcuts are recyclable. Needs a slot in the backrest also.
Or just make it out of one piece (it's been done) and skip the unnecessary rivets and extra material. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's good design....
"The seat area can be the same thickness as the legs and back section."
You could make it from one piece, but you'd be wasting material - the seat area wants to be thicker than the leg or back sections.
The seat area can be the same thickness as the legs and back section. This chair already exists as a one-piece design without any issue.
