Documentary director Julien Potart has a strange side hobby: Documenting the visually awful textile designs seen on public transport around the world.
Potart's incredibly well-populated Instagram account, idontgiveaseat, shows the offensive fabrics and lists their provenance.
As for why the patterns are so consistently awful, the commonly-accepted explanation is that, as with casino carpets, they're primarily designed to hide stains. For public transportation, I'd guess there's an additional goal of busying the visuals so that a forgotten object breaking up the pattern might draw attention, but I have no proof.
Plenty more to see here. I feel awful that somewhere, people are hired to design these.
