Check out "Del's Beautiful New Wooden Machine," a completely awesome kinetic wooden sculpture, activated with one crank, containing no nails or screws, and embodying some serious wood varieties.
I remember hearing about a design college project where the instructor assigned a bunch of freshman the task of constructing a (much simpler) wooden gear machine as a way to get them comfortable in the shop and using carving tools. But when a visitor asked the student to demo his finished construction, the student said that it didn't work. "Oh, that's too bad, are you going to fix it?" the visitor inquired. "No," responded the student, "it NEVER worked. I wasn't supposed to work...that wasn't part of the assignment."
Heartbreaking.
So for that visitor, we are happy to publish this extremely awesome wooden machine. And for that teacher...watch out: this guy oughta be gunning for your job!
