After we graduated from Pratt Institute in the '90s, my then-roommate began working freelance for the designer Eva Zeisel. Upon learning she had founded Pratt's Ceramic Arts/ID program in 1939, I felt sure it had to be a typo; how old could this woman be?
Fifteen years later, Eva Zeisel is still going strong. The 103-year-old has led an illustrious life--how many industrial designers do you know that were imprisoned in Russia for plotting to kill Joseph Stalin?--and has recently done work for clients like Crate & Barrel and Nambe.
Zeisel, who received the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005, was recently honored at New York's Museum of Arts and Design. Read all about it, and Zeisel, here.
