As many readers may know, we're big fans of bikes and bike culture here at Core77, so we do what we can to celebrate bike projects and bike builders. Below are some of our favorite projects from the past year, for all you like-minded riders. Whether you're hauling cargo or trying to shave seven grams off the total weight of your whip, we love to see the ingenuity and passion this community brings to their preferred mode of transport.
Eric Ludlum's photo gallery from the new Made handmade bicycle show in Portland, Oregon is a wonderful showcase of custom bikes, with plenty of links to bike builders and suppliers. The finishes, attention to detail and flawless execution on display here are an inspiration to us all, whether you ride or not.
While not an actual bike, the Cyclo-Knitter, by designer George Barratt-Jones, asks the user to ride an exercise bike that powers a knitting machine while waiting for their train. A charming example of community engagement while simultaneously promoting two forms of transportation that reduce traffic and pollution - what could be more Dutch?!
Touring trailers for bikes can be very handy, and the Beez trailer is a beautiful, minimalist version made from laminated wood and steel. The design includes a number of features, but for people outside of France you'll have to settle for photos, as it is only sald at select shops in France.
This project, by former Art Center student Drake Dong, was envisioned as an electronic grocery delivery vehicle for urban environments, deployed from a central warehouse or distribution facility. Atlas was honored as a notable entry in Emerging Technology in the 2023 Core77 Design Awards.
For some competitive cyclists, every gram counts, and for those people the Superleggero water bottle cage is a perfect fit. This 3D printed, titanium water bottle cage weighs in at only seven grams, and even at a price point of €380 (USD $411), the limited run of 99 units has only one left for sale. The perfect stocking stuffer for that hard-to-please biker in your family.
On the opposite end of the weight spectrum is the Mule, an all-terrain cargo carrier that can connect to your bike, or truck, or be pulled by hand when the going gets too rough. This handsome accessory extends the capability of your bike, turning it into an SUV suitable for off-grid weekend camping trips. When you're done use it to haul your gear to the beach.
