On an industry tour through Switzerland, American construction pros Matt Risinger and Jordan Smith visited homebuilder Kung Holzbau. The company builds timber homes that are free of adhesives and metal fasteners; they use those wooden nails we wrote about.
And amazingly, the insulation is just…wood. A lot of wood. As in, six to twelve layers of 5/4 boards, yielding walls up to 16" thick that deliver an R-value of 24. On top of that, Kung Holzbau's houses have 90-minute fire ratings, versus the 30-60-minute ratings common in America.
