I clean bottles with some 6mm glass balls I think are normally used for flower arrangements. Just swirl them around with a little dish soap and water.
Aquarium owners have a bit more specialized solutions, but it is essentially the same thing.

I wonder if with the proliferation of SSDs and other far cheaper forms of data storage, the rare earth magnet industry is scrambling to find new sources of revenue.
I think that might play a role. I'd be willing to bet it's just as much a push from clever packaging techniques using magnets as hidden clasps. My own laptop has several rare earth magnets in it despite using a SSD. They are placed along the edges and allow it to snap shut when closed. I think the crafting/tinkering/DIY world is driving a good amount of demand for hidden closure mechanics as well.
