This unusual mechanism was developed by an unknown inventor:
It's been integrated into a working clock, the Rantoge, which was successfully crowdfunded from Hong Kong earlier this year; it landed $377,465 on Kickstarter and a further $385,724 on IndieGogo, totaling an impressive $763,189.
However, the creators might have bit off more than they can chew—it was supposed to ship last May, but Kickstarter backers didn't start receiving the units until mid-October. IndieGogo backers are still waiting.

Shame about the manufacture delays, this is a cool and unique idea. It's neat because it's something that could have been made with the materials and tools available at the time of the first accurate mechanical clocks, but the exact concept of the specific design didn't exist until LCD displays.
Wow, what a great implementation for a clock. I was curious to see how much each was going for and discovered an error in the reporting of the funds raised. The indiegogo page only has 35 funders and mentions that the lion share of the funding raised was from another platform (kickstarter). It actually landed almost $400K but not $763K, which is still quite impressive.
You would need a case for this if you have cats!
that is pretty fun!
