This Mingle bench is by Shizuka Saito, a Geneva-based interior architect.
"MINGLE is developed as an extensible element, which adapts to its environment and to different situations. It retains its function as a single stool and can also be transformed into a bench for three people. Just like the changing situations of everyday life, Mingle evolves with the situations in which it is used."
The prototype was created with the support of the Ikea Foundation. As for production plans, Saito says the design is "still evolving."

Half-round forms on the top folding section would probably work well for structural strength and also for looks.
