As we mentioned earlier, Atari is re-releasing their 2600 game console, nearly in its original 1970s form. But for those who want the classic Atari gaming experience with more modern kit, they've also licensed their brand and I.P. to gaming hardware manufacturer My Arcade. My Arcade is rolling out this Atari Gamestation Pro, with decidedly updated hardware:
The Gamestation Pro contains over 200 games from Atari's 2600, 5200 and 7800 consoles, as well as unspecified "bonus games." What most caught my eye are the wireless joysticks, which unmistakably have Atari's original controllers as their inspiration, but which have been upgraded:
The little knob is meant to take the place of the paddles, so you can play games like Breakout and Warlords. (It is a bit weird that it takes 4 AA batteries, you'd think the USB-C port was to recharge the thing.
In any case, the Atari Gamestation Pro runs $100 (vs. the $130 for Atari's re-released 2600; surely there was at least one internal Atari argument about licensing their I.P. out). It's up for pre-order now, and will ship October 31st.
Amusingly, there is just a single retro touch applied to the Gamestation Pro: The package designers added wood grain to one panel of the box.
