It's been seven years since the Pokemon Go craze. Now Taito, the Japanese company that brought us Space Invaders 45 years ago, reckons they can pick up the AR mobile game mantle. This month Taito released Space Invaders: World Defense as a mobile app.
Yes, the pixelated monsters have returned to Earth, and when you look through your smartphone you can see and shoot them.

I get the "retro for style" idea, but it would have been more interesting to have the designs updated a little bit. As much as people like to romanticize older video games, a lot of the time their graphics were hamstrung by tech limitations rather than by creativity, and there's no reason to limit the visuals to the era's restrictions now.
