Here's an example of a design firm, architect/designer Jordi López Aguiló's Kutarq Studio, doing a lot with a little. Tasked with creating a folding wall hook for Ikea that would retail for just $3, Kutarq Studio designed the KLYKET:
The housing is powder-coated aluminum, the flip-down hook is acrylic-coated aluminum, the pin is stainless steel, and neodymium magnets keep it shut.
Kutarq Studio originally envisioned a more striking color…
…so we assume but the beige tone in the production model was more cost-effective. The KLYKET is $9 for a three-pack.

I don't think those studio shots are showing a more vibrant paint scheme. I think that's just a bright orange light shining on the beige hook. Look at the color on the interior of the hairpin-shaped piece.
With the magnets and manufacturing methods this is surely only doable at the price point due to Ikeas high volumes
Super cool that they had to mine magnets for a simple wall hook.
I don’t think Zach W gets enough credit for being the only person in the world to live a 100% sustainable zero-emissions lifestyle. That he still has the time to educate us all - and from a device made out of wood pulp and baby teeth, uploaded to the internet by sheer force of self-righteousness! - is both a miracle and a gift.
I sure as shit don't celebrate the excessive use of natural resources like some people..... but you just keep doing what's popular and cool and we'll all be in hell soon enough. thank you for your support.
So you're cool with Ikea harvesting a couple million pounds of magnets a year just so your little wall hook can pop into place? You don't think a little material friction bump-out or a slightly different design could have eliminated the need for that part? You just like to accept simple little designs like this without questioning if there is a better way?
