Wireless charging mat

Just when we find and post what we think is the perfect powerstrip solution (yesterday's Socket Sense post) we catch wind of another solution that may make the first obsolete.

Powermat's wireless charging device, scheduled to come out later this year, is both a fine antidote to cable clutter and an expression of minimalism: It's just a thin, white or black mat.

So, how does it work?

We don't care! We just want one.

While the concept is fun, these devices are HORRIBLY INEFFICIENT. The current efficiency versus just plugging a device in is 25-50%. Their goal is 75% in the next few years. Are we so lazy that we can't figure out a pretty solution to wire mess without having to make everything we use that much more energy sucking? Designers have the opportunity to make the world around them BETTER with design. We need to call thoughtless design out when we see it.

erm... is this site not meant to be a design resource? This entry seems more like the kind of fodder you'd find in a slapdash style mag. Besides, any designer that hasn't heard of inductive charging isn't worth a toffifee

Great concept, I totally love the idea of wireless charging, but, the device you "presently" need to actually use with it is horrible looking/obtuse... not sure if I'd rather just stick with what I have and plug it in, rather then have to plug it in to the compatible device that sits on the "wireless" charger. No?

See the camera and laptop references above if you're not sure what I'm talking about... that hockey puck looking thing.

Once all batteries are more like the cellphone representation they have then I'll switch in a heartbeat. :)
