NYCxDESIGN time is upon us. It's a season that always makes for an exciting time, but can also get a bit overwhelming when it comes to planning. That's why the editors at Core77 have put together a comprehensive guide to NYCxDESIGN 2023, recommending all the events we think are worth a visit over the next week.

Furnishing Utopia Presents: Public Access

An NYCxDesign exhibition marking the return of Furnishing Utopia, which is curated by Jean Lee of Ladies & Gentlemen Studio. PUBLIC ACCESS'S goal is to explore how design can inspire communal acts of sharing, by posing a foundational question to the design world: How can creative practices be more rooted in acts of care and empathy for the external world?

Herman Miller x Intramural Vintage Pop-Up

To celebrate 100 years of Herman Miller, the brand is providing a rare opportunity to peek into–and even perhaps own a piece of–its archives. Visitors will be able to purchase unique pieces deaccessioned from Herman Miller's archives, in addition to hard-to-find collectibles curated by New York's Intramural Shop.

Chris Wolston: Flower Power

A solo exhibition of new work by Medellín-based sculptural furniture designer and artist, Chris Wolston will kick off at the beginning of NYCxDesign in The Future Perfect's private West Village townhouse. Wolston's fourth solo exhibition and tenth presentation with the gallery, Flower Power marks a new direction for the artist's ceramic practice with the debut of a series of terracotta furniture and lighting—the first ceramic collection he has made exclusively for The Future Perfect.

The Sight Unseen Collection

For NYCxDESIGN 2023, Sight Unseen is showcasing the furniture work of 23 designers, including Aleiya Olu, Alexis & Ginger, Arvo Ray, Astraeus Clarke, Ceramicah, Cultivation Objects, and more.

NYCxDesign Opening Night Party

An initial celebration of all things NYCxDESIGN will be hosted by Studio by Tishman Speyer and Hem. Enjoy a playful installation of established design pieces alongside brand-new editions. This event is followed by an afterparty at Tuleste Factory in Manhattan from 8-11 PM.

Creative Mornings "Your Brain on Art" with Ivy Ross + Susan Magsamen at Newlab

Hear co-authors Ivy Ross and Susan Magsamen of the new book Your Brain on Art discuss how art is not just the aesthetic icing on the cake of life, but essential to the well-being of our bodies, communities, and planet. Ross and Magsamen offer a glimpse into the science of neuroaesthetics, a relatively recent field that focuses on the unique power of art and aesthetics to heal and transform our brains and bodies. They argue that we're on the verge of a cultural shift in which the arts can deliver potent, accessible, and proven solutions for the well-being of everyone, covering a range of compelling research that shows how art reduces stress levels, strengthens cognition, and provides other therapeutic benefits.

Leaning into Regenerative - Material Connexion

In this panel discussion between Dr. Andrew Dent (Executive Vice President of Research, Material ConneXion) and Lauryn Menard (Co-Founder and Creative Director, PROWL Studio) the pair will explore how shifting perspectives and R+D strategies can lead to practical solutions. Panelists will discuss how materials selection plays into brands' climate goals and methods of choosing alternatives that are within reach, but also push the envelope.

Multisensory Data Experience through Wagashi: Designer Talk and Workshop

How might we create tangible experiences around data by engaging senses beyond the visual? Data visualization is a powerful tool for making sense of complex information, but it often relies solely on the visual to communicate insights. Combining classic Japanese confectionary Wagashi with data analysis, multidisciplinary software designer at IDEO Tiange Wang shares her experimental approach of creating and sharing data stories through additional sensory elements like taste, smell, texture and physical interaction with the confectionary.

Join John Anderson, Executive Technology Director at Smart Design, and Denise Morris, NASA Program Manager, as they welcome Phnam Bagley, Founding Partner & Creative Director of Nonfiction, Ralph Fritsche, Senior Project Manager for Space Crop Production at NASA, and Conrad Zeidler, Engineer, Food Production Team at the Canadian Space Agency, for a discussion on the role and impact of design and innovation as we reach for the stars.

Upon Further Reflection is an exhibition supported by the AAPI Design Alliance and co-curated by Lora Appleton (Female Design Council/kinder MODERN) + Andrea Hill (Tortuga Forma). The exhibit features both lauded and emerging AAPI, female-identified artists & designers of all backgrounds, acknowledging the diversity within the Asian community; the differences and beauty within. Focusing on female-identified makers is intended to continue to provide a platform to the often under looked magic and fierce reflection of this prolific community.

ICFF / WantedDesign

Sunday marks the kickoff of ICFF, and theres much to be seen this year within the Javits Center. Some standouts worth looking out for include WantedDesign's LaunchPad of emerging designers, as well as their ECO Solidarity exhibit, with work by European designers "addressing the most pressing conditions of human health in response to the environmental and humanitarian crises."

Creative Synergies: Empowering Design through Technology
