Real designers ship, yes, but every once in a while I come across a striking prototype that I wish had made it into production. Today's example: This outrageously cantilevered Leia Lounge Chair, by Danish furniture designer Thomas Alken.
Sure, the physics of it seem improbable, with all of the weight being carried by those joints at the rear. But I picture some grizzled manufacturer with a cigar in his mouth saying "That's crazy. But it's so crazy that it just, might, work."
Alken, for the record, has plenty of pieces in production. You can see them at Format Design, the firm that Alken runs.
