It's a real bummer when you're walking along a nice, sandy beach…and you spot cigarette butts in the sand. Dutch industrial designer Chris Thistle wanted to do something about it, and designed this Cleanbeach beach ashtray out of biodegradable cardboard.
"The beach ashtray sifts the butts out of the sand and can be closed with a special closure," he writes.
"[They've] been purchased by various municipalities and the beaches of Kijkduin, Scheveningen, Bonaire and various coastal municipalities in Belgium. Just like with a dog poop bag, you can take it from a dispenser on the beach and use it all day."
The Cleanbeach was part of Holland's Clean Streets initiative, which aims to rid public places of discarded cigarette butts.

unfortunately you know the beach will just be littered with these full ashtrays.
I agree with you, but on the upside it means instead of someone having to clean up a dozen scattered cigarette butts, they only have to pick up one of these. Unfortunately, I also agree with Anthony that it's unlikely they'll even bother to use them.
Friends, to change the world it needs good ideas. Even when only a smal percentage use this in the future, some is already won. #safetybeld #trafficlights #suncream
might be a huge generalisation here, but, in my experience, smokers are filthy animals whole think nothing about littering
Yup, people who smoke on the beach next to kids are not the type who will clean up their mess and people who clean up don't smoke on the beach. Nice product but the target audience are assholes
