Industrial designer Lukas Bazle, who works for Ikea in Sweden but still does his own stuff on the side, devised this elegant user-adjustable Méduse lamp.
It's capable of a very neat trick:
The design came about because Bazle was doing what they taught us all in ID school: Playing around with materials.
"By experimenting with the very fascinating material of a honeycomb blind the idea was born to make an adjustable lampshade out of it. The already developed material can be adapted into a new but similar range of application. Besides its functional use for adjusting the direction and brightness of the light, the honeycombs also generate a kinetic motion. Thanks to this structure, the lampshade can also be stored in a very small package."
As it stands, it's a prototype and not in production (at least until Bazle's manager at Ikea gets wind of it).
