Interface design concept for controlling temperature

We know it's freezing outside (at least where we are) and the last thing you're thinking about is A/C, but here's a nifty interface design (by Tokyo-based Mac Funamizu) that could just as easily be applied to a heater.

The project description on Mr. Funamizu's portfolio page is light, but it seems to be a hologram containing graphic elements manipulated by the user to set temperature, humidity, and a timer.

I agree with Rob. The first rule of product design is that whatever you design should be better in some way than what is out there. This just seems like a gimmick.

Neat but... uh.. .why? What's wrong with a knob? I see zero advantage over a knob, or a sliding switch. What do you gain with a holographic interface but the exact same functionality? I don't get it.
