The Incredible Telescoping and Counterweighted Tara Lamp

The Tara lamp is "an intricate balancing act with an exciting trick up its sleeve," writes Hamburg-based furniture designer Matteo Bauer-Bornemann, who collaborated on the lamp with lighting designer Simon Schmitz. "We designed a telescopic mechanism that keeps its balance at any given moment. The head extends and the counterweight travels in the opposite direction, keeping the point of mass dead center."

"Since the counterweight travels on its own rail, the lamp only extends in one direction - making it space efficient in tight desk situations."
