This handsome Hub furniture/object is by Switzerland-based industrial designer and professor Tomas Kral:
"A standing solid wood coat hanger with a central plate to put keys or gloves."
His similar Twig design does away with the plate:
Of the two, I'd prefer the Hub—I'd use the plate constantly—but with the legs of the Twig; to avoid rocking, the base of the Hub requires a perfectly flat floor, which I don't have.
These are both in production, by Czech brand Jakub Brezina.

Re: the base of Hub, if you "dished" out a shallow concave on the base I think it would be more stable yet still have the more filled out visual the designer is going for. As for cost though, yeah, you could cut these sections out of plywood and glue/nail them together for about $30.

This coat rack is huge considering it only holds 3 jackets and it's damn sure not worth $1,000....
