Yep, those are scaled-up Erector Set pieces that Simon fabricated, as that was one of his favorite childhood toys.

He even made the gigantic screws:
The chair—apparently a one-off—is a departure for Simon, who primarily designs mobiles. (As in Alexander Calder, not Huawei.) You can check out his work here.
