The Drop Colander: Like a Salad Spinner, But With Less Parts

Italian industrial designer Viviana Degrandi designed this Drop colander, which is meant as an alternative to a salad spinner (and has less parts).

While it won't wash a salad big enough for four, it's designed to be loaded with berries, cherry tomatoes, herbs or greens. Once loaded the inner handle is rotated, closing it; then water can be run through the hollow handle and into the sphere.

The Drop was picked up by the MoMA Design Store, which retails them for $30.

Pretty object but a horrible replacement for either a colander or salad spinner.

No mention on if it comes apart. Can you clean it? What if something sticks to the bowl of the opaque part? Stays there forever?

Doesn't spin so it won't remove as much water as a salad spinner without spraying down your kitchen.

Rest it open on a counter & water will pool at the bottom of both bowl parts instead of draining & you'll probably wind up spilling that all over when you forget it does that.

This is design for design sake and makes 0 improvements in usability over traditional products.

With a handle so long, where would one find a water source high enough to fill it? The shower maybe?

Also it can't be used for most pasta like this as it will slide through gap that runs the ENTIRE circumference top to bottom.

How is this a "salad spinner"..? I have to physically whip my arm around to "spin" it? Also thanks for making it about 2 times bigger than any "salad spinner" I've ever seen! Super useful.

This is like saying a mesh bag is a salad spinner. One material, easy to clean, low cost. Boom, where's my deal MoMA? (and yes old-school salad spinners were just metal cages you swung around. those actually work better than this). There are so many things wrong with this design it's comical.
