3D printing and department stores don't sound like a natural fit. But Selfridges, a British chain, has launched a pop-up shop in London that features a towering 3D printing robot arm as the main attraction.
The pop-up shop is called SUPERMARKET, and the idea is to portray "an earth-conscious shop of the future" where customers aren't purchasing objects from inventory, but items made on demand from recycled goods. Thus the robot arm, which was provided in a collaboration between Parley from the Oceans and ABB Robotics.
On display is a grouping of plastic waste recovered by Parley for the Oceans. Alongside them is the robot arm, printing out objects created by design brand Nagami, using Parley Ocean Plastic®. The customer is meant to fill in the blanks.

The Term "Ocean Plastic" really needs clarity. It is now widely used by many brands to signify they are not using virgin plastic material, but often that plastic is sourced from industies related to fishing and shipping such as used nets, crates and boyes / floats. The term gives the impression of a harvesting process happening on the ocean (which does actually happen in some cases) but it is not really the case in most instances. We would really impact the cleanliness of the oceans if we were able to harvest, sort and reuse he microplastic we have filled our oceans with. The idea of producing to order and need would be great for many industries if the production method also is energy efficient per product at the same level as batch production. I would love to know if that has been taken into consideration with regards to the power consumption of the 3D printng robot.
