As an example of doing more with less, Vienna-based industrial designer Rainer Mutsch designed these Alva shelves using thin, unlikely-looking strips of wood for the structure.
"The design takes the material to its limits by utilising the torsional strength of wood to create a structure of high rigidity," he writes. "Alva is light and airy in appearance, but it is extremely sturdy too."
"Alva makes an ideal room divider, but it can also be used as shelving beside a sofa or armchair, while the round shelf provides a smart solution for corner storage."
Available in oak or ash and in various stains and colors, the Alva shelves are in production and sold by Sweden's Karl Andersson & Söner.

Good looking shelf but definitely not "minimal" use of material.... 16 vertical legs seems like a lot.
