  These appear to also be called Tambour-topped boxes and go back some time as a woodworking skill demonstration.  You can buy one for $60 on Etsy and I also found are really high-end $800 custom order piece.  There are more woodworking site instructions than pieces for sale.

  When I was growing up my grandfather had a rolltop desk just like this (with the pull mechanism of course). I was very impressed with it at the time, but you never see those any more. As my desk gets messier and messier, it seems like such a good idea.
