If you have studs in your ceiling then an old carpenter definitely played a trick on you.
I find that using a small neodymium magnet does the job just as well without the cleanup. You can even stick it on the end of a thin steel rod and use it as a stud "dowsing rod".
Of course you could use a little origami paper dust catcher to catch those bits of steel wool. You'll need a ruler to draw straight lines to fold it and of course you'll needs some paper... And then of course you'll need some painter's tape to tape that onto the wall. For the painter's tape you'll need a handy tape dispenser. I'm sure I'm leaving something out. I'll put this project on hold until I think of everything. (sorry 'bout all this)
