The original Mercedes-Benz 300SL is one of my most favorite car designs in the world, and we ran a five-part series on its design history (links below). Lisbon-based animator João Elias shares my passion, and wanted to create an animated short "featuring the most iconic car of all time," he writes. "I always loved this car."
While we know the car was conceived in a German design studio, Elias takes some poetic license and re-imagines the car's spontaneous birth on the Bonneville Salt Flats:

This piece renewed some fond memories, in about 1959 a friend and I ( we were teenagers at the time) went looking at used cars. One of the cars we looked at was a 300SL Gullwing, silver and like new we admired the car but the price was about $5,000, way out of reach for us. It is still one of my fondest memories and a car I admire very much.
This piece brought back many fond memories. In 1957 or 8 a friend and I went out looking at used automobiles (I was about 17 at the time). We looked at a number of great
