I recently learned there's two different ways to make rubber bands: A capital-intensive extrusion method, and a low-tech method similar to candle-making, where simple PVC tubes are dipped into liquid latex like wicks into candle wax. Here's the first version:

I found the second version much more interesting, partially because they show you the entire process--starting with getting the sap out of the tree--and also because the production is a lot more basic. (I did cringe a bit at the lack of safety features on the cutting machine.)

This is really economics 101. Any job can have capital substituted for labor. The more expensive labor is, the more capital will used as a substitute
