Hollands Licht Hollands Licht presented new lighting designs from award winning Dutch Designers as part of Ventura New York. 1 of 78

Hollands Licht This transforming light called Rhythm of Light by Susanne de Graef can either hang naturally or transform into a chandelier by lifting the bottom ring and attaching it at the top. 2 of 78

Hollands Licht The light can be hung vertically or horizontally, and its outer layer can be adjusted by hand. 3 of 78

Creative Chef Creative Chef combines product design and food to create meaningful dining experiences. Keeping with their mission to bring everyone together over food in unexpected ways, the designers decided to transform one of the most common dining accessories: table linens. 4 of 78

Creative Chef The pattern on the linens is actually made up of scannable sound waves, which when scanned create a musical composition to listen to over a meal. A phone with the scanning app can be passed around the table, and each time a guest scans their placemat or section of the tablecloth, a new sound is added to the piece. 5 of 78

Wool Amsterdam Wool Amsterdam designs room dividers that absorb sound. 6 of 78

Wool Amsterdam Each divider is inspired by nature, crafted by hand and made from natural wool felt. 7 of 78

Aleksandra Gaca Aleksandra Gaca's 3D woven textiles, aptly called Architextiles, have already been seen in the fashion and automotive worlds as cozy, sound dampening pieces. Gaca has been working to develop this technique for around 20 years—working to refine both the design and manufacturing process (now she is able to produce them by machine instead of by hand). 8 of 78

Aleksandra Gaca At ICFF, the designer exhibited a step into the home decor world with a series of cushions using her sound absorbent fabrics. The cushions provide a visual, tactile and auditory experience with a surprising gradient color effect as you move them around in your hands. 9 of 78

Ruben van Megen As a new take on the Dutch tradition of using rugs as tablecloths, Ruben van Megen exhibited a table that features a tabletop made from a real Persian rug covered in resin, thus preserving both the beauty and the scars of the carpet. 10 of 78

Ruben van Megen The designer also exhibited this chair, which explores another bygone interior trend: doily making. As a whole, Ruben van Megen's work illustrates the classic trend cycle: rise, acceptance, decline and return. 11 of 78

Ruben van Megen This doily is handmade and cast in metal to preserve the "lost art" and provide a contrast to the delicate nature of the traditional doily. 12 of 78

Cascando Workplace solutions design company Cascando exhibited a plethora of office designs, including stools, wall dividers and tables. 13 of 78

Rick Tegelaar Rick Tegelaar discovered that Colback, the same material dryer sheets are made from, can be 3D printed, so he decided to customize the FDM printing process to accommodate yarns made from the material. The designer also developed a method of adhering the printed yarn over non-woven Colback material to create reinforcements, add rigidity and create tensional strength. 16 of 78

Rick Tegelaar To make the table on display at ICFF, Tegelaar used this same technique to create a graphic layer on non-woven Colback to enhance the appearance of a material we all know from our laundry supplies. 17 of 78

Nienke Hoogvliet Nienke Hoogvliet's goal is to find ways to make the textile industry more sustainable, with a specific focus on working with pollution and starting a movement against fast fashion. For her exhibiting project, Kaumera Kimono, the designer created a new material from wastewater that can be used during the dyeing process. 19 of 78

Nienke Hoogvliet Hoogvliet discovered that Kaumera, an alginate like material derived from wastewater, actually makes textiles absorb dyes better. So, in turn, less water is needed in the dying process. To add color to the textiles, she used two natural dyes extracted from wastewater: Anammox and Vivianite. Kimonos are garments that, unlike fast fashion pieces, are passed on for generations, so Nienke decided it would be the ideal garment to apply her research to. 20 of 78

Lilian van Daal Radiolaria by Lilian van Daal explores ways to improve soft-seating by making use of nature's laws. She combined organic structures with the latest developments in 3D printing to create a chair model made from a single material. 21 of 78

The result is a flexible, adaptable, firm and stable seating solution that combines nature with advanced technology. 22 of 78

Bernhardt One of the largest booths at ICFF each and every year is the Bernhardt booth, which features multiple collections and collaborations across the furniture category. One of such collaborations is with athlete/actor/designer Terry Crews (we were totally photographing the furniture and not him). 26 of 78

Cranbrook Academy of Art "Design Mutations" Cranbook's booth at ICFF explores the transdisciplinary nature of design today with a focus on student work that mixes different materials and form languages to create something entirely their own. Core77 48 of 78

University of Cincinnati's "Section_001" Industrial Manufacturing Course Section_001 is a collaborative product and furniture design studio made up of ID and Architecture students at the University of Cincinnati. Students work with local companies in Cincinnati area, and are tasked with designing objects that leverage techniques that are typically used for heavy industry.
This project utilizes heavy vinyl to construct a hydroponic plant wall constructed out of welded vinyl pockets. Core77 51 of 78

The base of the table is constructed out of 3d printed support material—as described by the team, "showcasing the internals of this basic form allowed us to highlight the compelling detail that lies within the products that otherwise are unseen." University of Cincinnati's "Section_001" Industrial Manufacturing Course This end table was created using Autodesk's generative design programming, resulting in an unexpected yet structurally sound form. Core77 55 of 78

The University of Illinois at Chicago x Uncommon Goods This "Coffee Urn" by Nuzhat Arif utilizes the insect-repelling qualities of used coffee grounds so that food waste can be repurposed into a helpful product fuel that will save outdoor party guest from bug bites. Core77 60 of 78

Drexel University Chris Rudisill's lamp can be adjusted using touch, and is even embedded with audio associated with different light levels. Core77 61 of 78

Rendyr Optic This machine created by Virginia Tech School of Architecture and Design students is a laser cutter designed to fit on your desk, and can even be folded up and stowed away when it's not needed. University of Iowa 3D Design University of Iowa's exhibit focused on student work made with a CNC with flat packing capabilities. Core77 63 of 78

RISD x Mabeo RISD's exhibition featured project made out of a partnership between their design department and Mabeo Furniture, a furniture brand based in Botswana. As described in their press release, the class was meant to "unpack notions of cultural identity within the realm of contemporary art and design". Students were given the opportunity to design furniture pieces that were then prototyped in Botswana by Mabeo Furniture. Core77 64 of 78

Inflatable trend The 90s are back in full force, as demonstrated by furniture on display like these inflatable chairs by MOJOW. Core77 66 of 78

The Plote Table by MTHARU As described on the company's Instagram, this table was "digitally generated by misusing photogrammetry algorithms," and "the designs have been brought to life using a post-digital fabrication technique of CNC machining and hand applied scagliola." Core77 67 of 78

Miyazaki Chair Factory Miyazaki Chair Factory is a furniture company based in Tokushima, Japan whose assortment of chairs demonstrate how craft can be combined with advanced techniques and technologies to make high quality pieces for the home. Core77 70 of 78

Rosie Li Studio A new collection on view at designer Rosie Li's booth are these Pebble table, floor, and hanging lamps that were inspired by hand-riveted 1940's airplane hulls, which were designed in collaboration with architect Michael Yarinsky. Core77 72 of 78

David Vu Studio Some of David Vu's featured pieces on display at ICFF were made using an experimental process that results in the concrete base having a marbled texture to it. Core77 74 of 78

Design Milk Marketplace Design Milk's pop-up market within ICFF showcased work from a curated selection of designers and artisans. Core77 75 of 78

Mater Mater's booth included a display of their Ocean Chair, a circular economy product that utilizes plastic pellets generated from recycled bottle caps, fishnets, and other ocean plastic waste. Core77 76 of 78

Mater These may look like normal dining chairs, but Mater's Nova Chair is actually constructed out of recycled excess pieces of beech veneer, which are sliced and glued together using a patented process. Core77 78 of 78

If you're looking for the widest range of furniture projects to on view during NYCxDesign, ICFF is typically your best bet. The independent design world has crept its way into the traditionally larger-scale air of ICFF at Javitz Center, so in addition to your expected larger brands, we're beginning to see some of the young, upcoming design crowd trickle in with an upscale, and sometimes downright quirky, point of view.

The student shows also continue to delight us year after year, with 2019 as no exception: highlights include University of Cincinnati's "Section_001" class who partnered with industrial manufacturing to create some inventive designed objects using non-traditional processes and RISD's collaboration with Botswana-based studio and furniture manufacturer Mabeo.

It's safe to say in 2019, there's something for every type of furniture lover at ICFF.

If you go to ICFF then you should also go to WANTED Design's Manhattan showcase, just a few blocks south at Terminal Stores. It's smaller almost everything is very interesting and definitely more daring.
It's a 2-fer no-brainer.
