This year's Design Indaba Expo—part tradeshow, part retail market—was a grab bag of work. From pedestrian fashions to objet d'art, emerging creatives to corporate establishments, there was a bit of this and that for everyone. The standouts from this year's exhibitors came primarily from the Design Indaba-curated sections, specifically the Africa is Now program which highlighted creative collectives from Kenya, Senegal, Angola and Egypt, Take 2: Second Life of Objects showcasing designs that employ upcycled materials and the energy of the Emerging Creatives block of young South African designers.

Of note, a crop of young fashion designers like Adriaan Kuiters, Laduma Ngxokolo, Lukhanyo Mdingi and Katherine-Mary Pichulik represent a new generation of South African style makers that are creating their own vocabulary, informed by global shapes, but distinctly their own. For a taste of South African street fashion, follow photographer Trevor Stuurman, a member of the South African Imbadu Collective, who also showcased projects at the Expo. Ceramicist Andiel Dyalvane, whose Imiso line can be found at the Cape Town design destination The Biscuit Mill, also showed two otherworldly pieces with Imbadu.
