Frank Gehry Here you can see Frank Gehry's bench for Emeco, called Tuyomyo, "Yours and Mine" in Spanish. The use of aircraft manufacturing technology turned an initial three meter long wing of recycled aluminum into a polished, sculptural bench.

I almost thought the lamp was going to walk away as I approached it as if I had stumbled across some unknown alien creature.

My Bauhaus Is Better Than Yours Laura Strasser's porcelain lights are called 14% which references the percent of shrinkage which happens during the firing process. Each individual piece was used as a mold of the next causing the "14%" to become less and less distinct as the pieces get smaller and smaller.

Prix Emile Hermes Aimed at young, European designers, the Prix Émile Hermès rewards the creation of innovative objects. This year it was happening for the first time with the theme "Everyday Lightness". Prophets and Penitents: Confessions of a Chair DAMn magazine had invited an eclectic mix of more than 30 designers to express their personal confessions on chair prototyping, with many of the pieces seen in public for the first time.

Superstudio Piu Superstudio was one of the largest and most visitied events in all the festival. Every year a TV station moves out of their headquarters, and the designers move in. Superstudio is made up of a group of mini exhibitions including the standards, Tom Dixon and Moooi, however this year there were many new comers!

Lago Appartamento The Lago Appartamento was located in the middle of the hubub on the Via Tortona. Every day we would stand on the balcony and watch the masses wander, most made their way inside to check out the Lago space. Not only were all the Lago designs on display, but they were in use as well--a concept sure to be imitated at many festivals to come. Lago also promoted work by some Royal College of Art students.

Goods For Conversation Goods For Conversation hosted a show including many designers, as well as a themed exhibition entitled Face Value, by Ine van den Elsen.

Public Design Festival The Public Design Festival is made up of many installations around the Zona Tortona. Instead of renting a fancy showroom, each installation uses a parking space, which sends symbolic message on top of the straight-forward experience.

Lab 23 Lab 23 had constructed a literal white box. This was a place people would go to drink, listen to loud music and to simply chill out.

Established & Sons The Established and Sons exhibition was constructed of Tulip wood in a space with 50 foot ceilings, and dramatic lighting. The show was equip with new and old designs displayed in one labyrinth of wood.

Design Academy Eindhoven The students of Design Academy Eindhoven created a wonderful naturally lit environment, equip with furniture, fashion design, pottery, and a little store.

Hailed as one of the largest design events in the world, Milan Design Week has many growing clusters. The Fairgrounds are full of business, while the streets of the Zona Tortona and beyond are bustling with clanking glasses, great Italian food, and a younger scene of artists and designers alike. The event consists of mainly industrial design, but this year we saw sculpture, art performances, environmentally concerned discourse, and music.
