The Smau Industrial Design Award is one of the most outstanding Smau initiatives. Now celebrating its 27th anniversary, it is acknowledged as one of the most important design events in the sector.
The jury examined the more than 150 entries of products present at the 31st International Exhibition of Information Technology, held in Milan, Italy, October 13-18, 1994. They expressed their satisfaction at the high quality and the outstanding level of innovation of all the products participating in the award.
Quality awards. On this basis, it was decided to grant 8 awards of equal merit to:
* Powerbook 540C by Apple Computer "Notebook. For an innovative keyboard and pointer solution together with a capacity for expressing a pleasant user rapport, and special user applications".
* D Base 5.0 for Windows by Borland International This is a remarkable extension of the Windows environment with a tendency towards the subjects of the previous DOS version. It provides development environment that can be used by users of different levels of competence and background."
* Spaceball IBM 6094/3D by IBM "3D input device. For the consistency existing between formal image and use, defined by a primary, essential form."
* Raidion LT by Micropolis "Fault tolerant disk array. For its rational modularity, accompanied by an elegant, clever formal solution."
* Microsoft Creative Writer by Microsoft "Software. This element of a household software series proposes a style which extends the very idea of text and makes it so simple and flexible that it can be used by children, thus contributing to interactive multimedia culture through serious educational games."
* Nokia Cityman 500 by Nokia Mobile Phones "Cell phone. For the care that has been invested in the various ways it can be used with only one hand."
* CF-41 by Panasonic "Multimedia notebook. For its extreme compactness, its rational CD access and the quality of formal detail."
* View-Cam VL-H410S by Sharp Corporation "'Camcorder. For the innovative pre-figuration of new ways of using the device and for the remarkable attention that has been given to ergonomic factors."
Given the high quality of the products, the jury gave special mention to two products: Canon BN - 100 C, notebook with printer, and Vidar VXR-12, X-ray-scanner.
The international jury was pleased to have the opportunity to compare products from all over the world in the field of Information Technology, confirming the international standing which the award has achieved.
