               An Invitation to a Show

The University of New South Wales (OZ) will be holding their
Industrial Design graduation exhibition from the 1st-7th
December. This will be the culmination of 4 years of hard grind.
The projects cover a wide range of fields from furniture to
hi-tech medical equipment.

It will be held in the Gallery of the Darling Park development at
                      202 Sussex St.,
                          Sydney.

Any inquiries can be directed to me, Peter Black, at:

             U2105798@arch.unsw.edu.au.

*** NOT TO BE MISSED ***

PS; We are hoping to put a copy of our exhibition catalogue onto
a WWW site here. I will post a notice when this goes online!

Calling All IDFORUM Surfers!

I am a postgraduate Industrial Design student at the University of
Central England in Birmingham, England, currently carrying out research
into the design of medical equipment for the Health care industry,
focusing on equipment used outside he hospital environment, by
operatives such as paramedics.

Areas being researched include: current and future developments
within the health care industry, the companies who service it,
government legislation, new technology and materials, paramedic
working procedures and environments, the design process etc. The
result of this research will take the form of guidelines for the
successful design and development of future medical products aimed
at this market segment. These guidelines will be tested during the
second phase of the project which will be the development of a product
for this market.

i would therefore appreciate the opportunity to discuss these matters
with anyone out there who is currently working in a related area,
who may have any useful information or is just interested and may
have some helpful ideas.

I can be contacted by snailmail at:

            Postgraduate Programme Recommendations
Hi;
My name is Kirsten White and I will be graduating from the
Industrial Design programme at Ontario College of Art, Toronto,
Canada, in May. I wish to continue on to postgraduate study,
either in North America or Europe (U.K. or France, I am
bilingual). Can any one suggest/recommend postgraduate
industrial design programmes that will allow me to major
in furniture and/or exhibition display.
I do not have my own e-mail address so please respond
either to the list or send your message to Maurice Barnwell at
                GL250267@VENUS.YORKU.CA
                                 Thanks for your help, Kirsten.

internet typeface design project

every play the game telephone? imagine the same thing
with a typeface - rather, a character - but quite a bit
more coherent (i hope).

currently 23 people are participating. 2 weeks
for each person to create the characters they wish
and pass on the fontographer file to the next participant
should be more than enough time; for those with slow
mailfeeds, 2 weeks from the receipt of the previous
person's work should be good. we hope that most people
will get done faster than that though, but there is
no pressure on getting this done at any particular
time. the first round will be a bit of an experiment
anyway (actually, the whole thing is a bit of an
experiment) and we'll be able to isolate and iron out
any kinks or problems after we've gone through a full
rotation. Next week the ordered list (picked randomly
in an unscientific way - i'll put the names in a hat
and draw them all out) will be sent out to everyone.

Once again, here are the technical necessities:

fontographer 3.8 or later, windows or macintosh
versions should be fine (is there an SGI version?).
If you don't have FOG, don't fret. You can compose your
character(s) in any good postscript drawing program
and send them as EPS files, those can be easily
imported into FOG on either platform. binhex, or something
comparable. compression software, either compact
pro/stuffit on the mac or zip on the pc.

if a participant in the design somewhere down the line -
really, anywhere along it - decides their artistic vision
is incompatible with what's being created, the design
does not stop there. they can skip their turn if they like,
and start a new typeface at the same time, passing
that on to the next person (or better yet, the first person
on the list).

when we finish it, everyone gets a copy. at any given time,
participants can request a copy of what's done up to that
time from the moderator (me, again). of course I might not
have anything, if you request the material between rounds.
Within a few weeks, I'll have an ftp server up and running on
my mac and this should go much smoother; you can simply ftp
in, take the latest version, work on it, and upload it when
you're finished.

any comments? changes to the rules? these are far from
complete. do we really need any rules at all?

again, we don't need to restrict ourselves to latin characters
this first time (or any time, for that matter). Scan in
found art. Draw something in freehand. Whatever fits
in, whatever works, whatever complements. Whatever
you want.

                               CE95
                  SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
          CONCURRENT ENGINEERING: RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS
                       Washington, DC Area
                        August 23-25, 1995

                       FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

CE95, Concurrent Engineering: Research and Applications, is a
major forum for the international scientific exchange and
presentation of multi-disciplinary and inter-organizational
aspects of concurrent engineering (CE). The focus is on the use
of integrated enterprise processes, collaborative work,
information sharing, co-locating resources, and integrated
frameworks and tools. This conference addresses research and
applications issues of CE.

CE95 is sponsored by Concurrent Technologies Corporation,
GE Corporate Research and Development, the International Society
for Productivity Enhancement, and the CERA Journal. It is hosted
by Concurrent Technologies Corporation, Johnstown, PA, USA.

Topics of Interest:

Submissions are invited on substantial, original and previously
unpublished research in all areas of product design, engineering
and manufacturing, including, but not limited to:

* Enterprise integration (e.g., assessing an organization's
readiness, CE assessment models, integrated process capture, re-
engineering enterprise processes, CE metrics, barriers to CE,
  agile manufacturing, virtual enterprises)

* Cooperative work (e.g., team coordination, common visibility
of activities and data, monitoring progress of product
development, change notification across perspectives, conflict
resolution techniques, constraints management, planning and
scheduling of activities, workflow, cooperative problem solving,
  computer support for team structure)

* Information sharing (e.g., information modeling and
simulation, data version control and management, PDES/STEP,
multi-level user access, capturing corporate history, enterprise
multimedia notebooks, design rationale, integrated database and
  knowledgebase management systems)

* Communication tools (e.g., computer-based video and audio
conferring and consulting, multimedia electronic mail, network-
wide sharing of tools, graphical collaborative user interfaces for
  inter-operability)

* Integrated frameworks and tools (e.g., architectures for
building concurrent engineering systems, integration of tools,
integration of design and manufacturing, knowledge-based
  integration)

* Life cycle engineering (e.g., design for X, integrated
product and process development, environmentally conscious design
and manufacturing, life-cycle cost and quality)

* Practical applications of CE in industry (e.g., case studies,
practical solutions, systematic guidelines, pitfalls and success
  stories)

Timetable:

* Authors should submit a full draft paper, not exceeding 16 single spaced
pages, to the Program Co-Chairs or Program Chair, no later than
January 1, 1995 (preferably by E-mail in plain ASCII or PostScript).
Submissions received after that date will be returned unopened.

* Notification of acceptance or rejection will be mailed to the
first author (or designated author) on or before February 28,
  1995.

* Final camera-ready versions of the papers must be received by
April 15, 1995. Details of the format will be sent later.
