The International Design Centre Nagoya played host to the 14th meeting of ICSID/AMCOM, held on November 4-6, 1994. Thirty delegates from Australia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore, with Taiwan as an observer, gathered in the impressive Nagoya Congress Hall in Nagoya, Japan to discuss design development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Addressing the group, Mr Shinichi Arai, President of the Japan Design Foundation, expressed his delight to learn of the stimulating progress made in design among countries in Asia. He urged them to develop and strengthen their mutual co-operation and understanding in design through the exchange of information and the provision of technical assistance.

AMCOM development. Some of the highlights of the achievements made in design by the various member countries should serve to illustrate the development in 1994:

* The Design Institute of Australia was successful in its bid to hold the joint congresses of ICSID and ICOGRADA in Sydney in 1999. "Design '99 Sydney" will place emphasis on examining and reviewing design in the 21st Century.

* The Malaysian Design Council was launched on January 25, 1994. It is expected to promote good design and co-ordinate design activities in order to enhance the competitiveness of Malaysian manufactured products in both local and international markets.

* JIDPO (Japanese Industrial Design Promotion Organisation) and JDF (Japanese Design foundation) have been streamlined with clearly defined areas. While JIDPO's promotional activities will be targeted at the domestic level, with closer collaboration with various professional design organizations, JDF will be involved in networking with various local and international design centers.

* Korea has been experiencing a "design boom" since the beginning of the 1990s. The development of major Korean industrial corporations have increasingly strengthened their industrial design activities. The development has led to the merger of three major design organizations in June 1994. The new cohesive professional organization is now the Korean Association of Industrial Designers (KAID). Its aim is to foster mutual collaboration in information exchange, creative research and development and the implementation of quality educational programs.

* Singapore was the venue of the 4th International Design Forum, the foremost design event in Southeast Asia. It took place from October 19-23, 1994. Some 280 delegates from more than 21 countries attended a 3-day design conference on the theme "Design Sustains Development".

* Taiwan has been actively preparing and promoting the ICSID '95 Taipei Congress and the 19th ICSID Assembly to take place from September 25-28, 1995. The theme of the congress is "Towards Century 21: Design for a Changing World". Besides the congress, there will be two major exhibitions namely, the Young Designers' Workshop and the Taipei International Design Exhibition, TIDEX '95.

* Though Thailand participated as an observer, the Design Service Centre made a convincing presentation of its role and functions.

Future venues. The next meeting will be held in Taiwan to coincide with the ICSID Congress '95 and in Australia in 1999 in conjunction with Design '99 Sydney.
