The 7th International Forum on Design Management Research and Education
July 9-12, 1995 Stanford University
"Connecting Value"

The Design Management Institute is pleased to announce that the Seventh International Forum on Design Management Research and Education will be hosted by the Design Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, on July 9-12, 1995.

ABOUT THE FORUM

Founded by the Design Management Institute, the International Forum on Design Management Research & Education is an organization of researchers and teachers whose work embraces problems and issues related to the field of design management. The Forum's mission is to facilitate communication and encourage collaboration among its members; to encourage research that will result in practical applications in both education and practice; and to help members integrate design management issues into existing educational programs.

Over the past six years, through meetings at the Harvard Business School, the Copenhagen Business School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ESCP/Paris, and the London Business School, the Forum has become the most important international arena for the sharing of research, teaching and practice in design management.

FORUM 1995

The Forum encourages participation across a broad range of design management perspectives. In manufacturing industries it examines such issues as new product development, design for manufacturing, integration of innovation, and technology change. In service industries it studies such problems as managing the design of the environment, products, and communications for service businesses. Forum presentations also include broad areas of research such as corporate identity and design strategy.

The key theme of the 1995 Forum is CONNECTING VALUE, as related to the customer's perception and interaction with products and services. Although other topics are welcome, we encourage Forum members to submit papers that contribute to this field of research. All papers will be given the same consideration.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Participants may contribute to the Forum by presenting a paper or participating as a workshop member. This year's contributions will be organized around three focus blocks: Research, Teaching, and Practice. We have defined these blocks as follows:

Research Block
This block will focus upon research that adds to the theoretical understanding of the management of design in both manufacturing and service contexts.

Teaching Block
This block will focus upon new teaching initiatives, new teaching materials and new methods. We are also interested in accounts of team teaching across functions or disciplines.

Practice Block
This block will focus upon accounts of individual projects within companies. They may come either from practitioners who participated in these projects, or from academics who were observers or researchers.

Contributions are being solicited in three categories:
