The project that can be seen in the Jpeg image is currently under development as part of my final year studies. The original design brief was recieved from Metropolis Design Consultancy on the 3 / 11 / 94. Technical support for the project is being provided by Hitachi Koki (UK) Ltd.
The product criteria was to develop a non-explosive cordless hammer for use in : Concrete fastenings, stud walling, packing cases, plaster boarding, fencing, joinery and use in confined spaces. The powered hammer has numerous applications. Primarily the product will position and locate a wide variety of commercially available nails. It will be able to hammer in a wide variety of nails into a range of materials. The product provides a labour saving alternative to existing manual hammers.
The hammer utilises existing hammer drill technology. The internal mechanism of a Hitachi hammer has been modified to provide the necessary force required to locate nails. (Jpeg image).Experimental and mathematical models have been created which prove that the concept is a viable option. The image provides a photograph of a blue foam concept model which requires evaluation. The design of the outer casing is based primarily on improved user ergonomics. The centrally located handle provides greater balance and improved grip location. Two handles are used to oppose operational forces and provide stability. Concave dimpled grip surfaces prevent pressure hot spots occuring during use.
The power hammer is aimed at the semi-professional craftsman. This market requires more than the average power tool. The frequency with which they perform tasks suits the labour saving advantages of a powered hammer. The product is intended to retail for approximately £300 - £400.
