For making straight cuts through wood, there's nothing better than the EZ Track Saw Guide Rail System (which we reviewed in-depth here). It turns any circular saw into a precision tool by attaching a baseplate to it that rides smoothly along an aluminum track, allowing you to make cuts with the precision of a table saw. But it takes up far less space and costs less than a table saw, it's safer to use since you cut away from you rather than towards, and you can select tracks of different lengths, or connect two tracks to make a super-long one. Invaluable for the lone DIY'er, as with this system, just one person can safely and accurately rip-cut a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Try doing that by yourself with a table saw.
