Fuyuu is a set of wireless speakers inspired by the Japanese concept of shibusa—a subdued experience of intrinsically fine quality, with economy of line and form. Currently, wireless speakers all skew toward soft, geometric shapes. Fuyuu purports a different design language, bringing a form factor with more permanence and more of a presence.
Equipped with 4 tweeters, 5 midrange woofers, and 4 subwoofers, Fuyuu delivers high quality sound in an evocative form factor. With Bamboo veneer panels and Kvadrat fabric, both the audible and tangible aesthetics of Fuyuu resonate with thoughtfulness and considered design.
Leveraging a hybrid-API approach, Fuyuu syncs with existing music streaming apps, allowing users to carry over their music and taste. At the same time, a "Fuyuu-specific" profile is generated on these apps, allowing playlists to be tailored to the specific settings in which users listen to Fuyuu speakers.
Osagie Igbeare, Industrial Designer
Currently, wireless speaker design skews towards soft, geometric shapes and portable form factors, which not only makes for industry homogeneity but sucks the creativity and spice out of an object that is supposed to provide those very things (creativity/enjoyment) by emitting our favorite songs.
Fuyuu takes a different approach to wireless speaker design, purporting a more architectural and statuesque form factor. Inspired by Japanese architecture and interior design, the ethos behind Fuyuu's form was to create a colloquial sculpture—an object that has a presence of its own, yet was comfortable in a home setting. Pulling from the repetition seen in the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine as well as in Japanese interiors—Fuyuu is a faceted cone with 10 sides. 13 different speakers are housed on the left and right facades as well as in the top pinnacle. With 4 tweeters, 5 mid-range woofers and 4 subwoofers, Fuyuu is able to deliver high quality sound in the X,Y, and Z directions for an immersive music listening experience.
8 of the speaker panels are made from a 1/8" thick bamboo veneer. The other 2 panels—the ones that cover the actual speakers, are from Denmark's high end textile manufacturer, Kvadrat. Kvadrat's unique textile blend allow for a tri-blend fabric aesthetic while maintaining acoustic transparency, so all of the sound makes it through.
Each Fuyuu speaker comes with an inductive charging base. Ring LEDs on the bottom of the speakers indicate when Fuyuu is on low charge, currently charging, and is fully charged.
The charging base was also designed to have a statuesque presence when uncovered. It's 10 faceted sides allow for a consistent design language with the speakers. The smooth to faceted surface transition on the placement spires are subtle details that provide visual interest while also harkening shibusa.
Fuyuu's CMF also remains true to the Japanese ethos. Fuyuu and its accompanying stand come in one of four colors—Carmine Red, Konn Iro Blue, Light Wolf Grey, and Goldenrod. Konn Iro is a deep blue that harkens back to ancient Japanese textile work.
Fuyuu's app interface provides a coherent physical to digital product experience, with a "hybrid-API" approach. Plenty of streaming apps already exist, Spotify, Pandora, Soundcloud, Apple Music, you name it. Hybrid-API allows Fuyuu to pull from Spotify's data to port over your favorite music to the app while Spotify pulls from Fuyuu's data to know what music you're listening to over the speakers. This gives users the option to listen from Fuyuu's app or from their favorite streaming service. As more and more songs are played, a user-specific "Fuyuu profile" can be created on your favorite streaming service. So whether you listen to Fuyuu speakers alone, in a small crowd, or with a large group of friends, playlists can be tailored to your preferences.
