Even though marble is commonly associated with luxury goods, its waste is affordable and plentiful. This lamp finds a possible function for this waste and uses marble's proprieties to create an organic light shade.

By leaving the dust free to move, the user is encouraged to interact with this product. By doing so, they also interact with the surrounding space and the way light affects it.

The placement of the lightbulb in an off-centered position means that the lamp will show a different amount of light depending on which face it is resting on.

Through observation and research during several trips to the city of Carrara, Italy, we were overwhelmed by the proportion of the marble industry and of its waste. It soon became our goal to find a practical use for this waste and even this material in general, as it is predominantly used for its aesthetic and perceived value.

The outcome is a cube shaped table lamp made of clear acrylic and recycled marble dust.

The greatest challenge of this project was to try to be innovative using a very static and traditional material.It is quite unusual to make use of marble dust in a design piece. Normally designers would try to use the whitest pieces, or the most unique looking ones to then polish them to perfection and present what it is thought to be the beauty of this material. For selce studio, the real beauty of marble is focused on its unique functional proprieties, making the unusual decision of using marble dust the most logical one.

Most marble products are developed without taking into consideration the impact that this industry has on our landscape, and now more than ever it is important to be logical and smart about the way designers use marble, especially its waste.This lamp tackles the problem by showing how much can be done using this waste responsibly.
