We sit and wait a lot.
Flipside is a project exploring anticipation and the links between waiting and environments. The Flipside chair accentuates the feelings of dread and excitement and emotions under the anticipation umbrella while investigating form and its relationship with emotion.
Izzi Hays - Designer
The spaces we wait in typically all look the same and are very unemotional in design, despite the fact that so many emotions are felt there. Flipside aims to challenge this form through exaggeration.
Primary research involved looking at how people wait and how the curvature of the spine related to different emotions. Dread and excitement were both specifically targeted. These forms were translated into the shape of the Flipside chair. The chair itself was constructed in a flat pack style, where each of the elements was laser cut and slotted together and then sanded by hand. A removal of color within the design reflects the removal of emotion within these spaces.
