Lumma is a smart pill dispenser that completely automates the dispensing and sorting of medications. A companion mobile application interacts with the device, reminds you to take pills, notifies you if loved ones forgot to take pills, and keeps track of everything. The Lumma system can be a lifesaver for those who take pills each day, as well as for their loved ones.
The norm in the medical industry is to put little to no effort the design of devices. Most engineers simply encase the inner workings in a dull, grey box and imbed some small LED's. With Lumma, we wanted to make sure our product was inviting, for a better user experience.
The Lumma Team at LITE - Life Integrating Technologies and Experiences Inc
The objective of the design for Lumma was to create something simple, elegant, and somewhat inconspicuous. We wanted to develop something that eliminated the experience of waking up to look at pill bottles and the standard Sunday-to-Saturday box. The design was quite challenging because of the space requirements. The device needs to hold up to 12 different types of medications and an assortment of mechanics and electronics.
The team began by creating a simple, box design out of clay and then worked through a second prototype using ABS plastic on a 3D printer. Over time, we molded and curved Lumma until the form acquired the right balance between function and simplicity. Our inspirations for the design were mostly kitchen appliances and knickknacks that we had lying around our houses. We believed a combination of the two would allow Lumma to blend into any background.
3D design and quality-tiered printing were vital to our success because we were able to create, critique, and correct designs rapidly and inexpensively. We used both DaVinci and Makerbot consumer-grade printers to make the scaled models. Finally, we printed with industrial-grade printers to generate a final product that emulates the way the device will be manufactured. This tiered procedure enabled us to both design a beautiful product and prepare the 3D renderings for their fabricators.
Lumma is currently available for pre-order on Kickstarter.
