Spotted on Reddit's Mechanical GIFs page is this crazy-looking set-up:
Initially I couldn't figure out why they're peck-drilling holes into the end of each; at first I thought perhaps these were to be strung together, but the drill does not appear to go all the way through. But now I'm guessing it's simply to thread in a hook if these are say, Christmas tree ornaments, or perhaps they index these on a pin for some other operation.

Very cool!
My guess is that the "pecking" needs to be done in order to keep the stock centered as the spherical bit bites into it. If not for the pecking, I imagine pieces of the stock would go flying all over the place.
It's an educated guess based on learning these things the hard way.
mesmerizing!
I think the drill is just there to remove the nub of the previous cut. since the ball is likely to brake off before the hole saw actually reaches the centerline, this would clean 1 side. doesn't sem to go deep at all...
I think so too. Getting rid of the nub during the material removal phase will remove the need to sand it off at a later stage.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.
