For a concept shoot in Bali, surfing rag Stab Magazine towed a floating dock out to where the waves break, then set Volcom's surfing team loose. Here's what happened, and it looks as fun as it does dangerous:

This was such an interesting project and I am glad you picked up on it. Having grown up surfing my opinion is that this idea is both supernatural and unrealistic. As an actual product for the masses, it can never be, the team here chose a remote break(as in no one around) in Bali with a very particular type of wave(right and left peak) that there is only a couple of similar spots in California. Essentially, this cannot be located where the public goes to surf, it would result in certain death. If this was positioned at a break like Trestles in San Clemente, 6 people would die per day.
0____0 cool.
Make them motorized with solar powered motors that keep to a given GPS coordinates. Build it one mile wide and you have the first ocean highway to Europe. If winter storms break it up it motors back to its position and reattaches to the others.
