After being paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, Mark Owen spent ten years in a wheelchair, but couldn't find one to his liking. He and his brother Jon, along with furniture designer Angela Gidden and design firm Studio SDA, then set about designing their own, using the money from Owen's personal injury claim to fund a company to produce them.
The result is the now-in-production Nomad Wheelchair, a minimal and lightweight mobility device that has just won the First Time Design Project award from Design Management Europe, an organization committed to "recognising the skills and leadership of management to implement design in their business for commercial success."
