Hidden Vases by Chris Kabel for Valerie Projects at Palazzo Litta Developed for the Spanish publication The Plant, the jewel-toned glass centerpiece of Chris Kabel's vases give the illusion of functioning as a vessel when in fact, they are drip feeding water into the base of the vase. Gypsum Disorder by Damien Gernay and Delvaux for Belgium is Design at Palazzo Litta When we first saw Damien Gernay's dynamic sculptural forms, it was easy to admire the fluid shape and scale of the pieces. But when we realized that the smooth surfaces and imperfect edges were crafted in leather we had to take a second look. Gernay's experiments in leather highlight the beauty of plaster tools. Oxidation Aftermath was the graduation project of one of the co-founders Marlies van Putten and shows how the process of oxidation can shape form and color. The distance between the porcelain and the flame, as well as the speed at which the porcelain object revolves in the installation, affects its final texture. Clara von Zweigbergk and Shane Schneck for Nike's Nature of Motion A delicate balance is Clara von Zweigbergk and Shane Schneck's answer to the question of the Nature of Motion. A collection of stools from the Stockholm-based design couple is a playful take on the theme—a range of cork forms of varying heights and "postures" require a sitter to engage the body in varying ways in order to gain stability on these gently tilting, rocking, and precariously balanced seats. Sebastian Wrong for Nike's Nature of Motion The London-based designer created a seat worthy for team players. Using the 1913 painting by Italian Futurist Umberto Boccioni's "Dynamism of a Soccer Player" as a starting point, Wrong upholstered the communal chair with Flyknit fabric—the painting's distinctive shapes emerge when viewing the seat from above. With over half a million visitors descending on Milan each year for the festivities associated with the oldest (and arguably most important) design event on the calendar, there's really something for everyone to see. Beyond the Salone del Mobile at Rho Fiera, exhibitions at the Triennale Design Museum and the super design district of Ventura Lambrate, our editors took time to explore satellite shows held in the city's more adventurous locations ranging from an abandoned shopping arcade to breathtaking palazzos dotting the city.
