Vestae by Creative Academy The students of Creative Academy, the design school of the luxury goods group Richemont (their portfolio includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Piaget and Montblanc), presented a capsule collection based on wellness in the stunning setting of the Albergo Diurno-designed bathhouse located at the subway entrance of Piazza Oberdan. Future Flora by Giulia Tomasello of Central Saint Martins This material exploration by Tomasello uses techniques of microencapsulation to trap probiotic bacteria within a non-woven fabric, given us the possibility of "our clothes and accessories becoming the ecosystem that balance and support our skin flora" and increasing overall health. "Sea Meat" by Hanan Alkouh of Central Saint Martins As it becomes more transparent in society just how environmentally unsustainable, Alkouh's project explores how meat might be produced in a post-meat world. The appointed alternative material? Dulse seaweed, which apparently when fried tastes like bacon. Core77 38 of 94

"Pure Human: Exploration of the Intersection Between Biology and Luxury" by Tina Gorjanc Gorjanc's project from the Material Futures exhibit explores a possible future where biological material could inform a new luxury market (these speculative designs are leather products cultivated entirely from an individual's skin cells). "Phantom Sensations" by Niloufar Esfandiary of Central Saint Martins This project by Esfandiary is a set of post-amputation tools that attempt to reduce phantom limb pain by manually enabling a stronger link between one's brain and their missing limb. Core77 41 of 94

"Dew" by Apilada Vorachart of Central Saint Martins A common practice in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand involves burning husks and cobs of corn which would otherwise not be used. Vorachart's project for the 'Material Futures' exhibition creates elegant and practical product solutions using this collected corn waste. Core77 43 of 94

Inedible Futures by Valentina Coraglia of Central Saint Martins This project from Coraglia asks, "can design be a provocative tool to address socio-cultural issues?" In the project, Coraglia processes rubble from natural disaster sites in Italy to create large pasta forms, acting as a social critique on the Italian government's inability to efficiently deal with disaster aftermath. "Independent Labor" by Anne Vaandrager of Central Saint Martins Ruminating on the possibility of the National Health Service being privatized by the UK government, Vaandrager creates a speculative alternative solution for childbirth outside of the hospital environment. Core77 47 of 94

"HUMANMADE" by Charlotte Nordmoen of Central Saint Martins Nordmoen's project in the "Material Futures" exhibit explores the future of work and the potential for a world without jobs. The installation employs a robot that could even replace the humble ceramicist. Core77 51 of 94

"Through the Skyglow" by Manuel Thiessart of Central Saint Martins This playful project by Thiessart in the "Material Futures" show is a product meant to help city dwellers stargaze despite the presence of light pollution. Core77 53 of 94

"Mining Dust" by Mi Zhang of Central Saint Martins In a simple solution for using dust that collects during manufacturing to improve air quality, designer Mi Zhang creates objects from a material that mixes collected marble dust and pine resin. Core77 55 of 94

"In Our Office", an exhibition by Lund University School of Industrial Design This exhibition is a collection of products create by students at the Lund University School of Industrial Design. Supervised by designer Stefan Diez as well as Rolf Hay of HAY, students envisioned office furniture and products that reflect the habits of young creatives whose behaviors can change the conventional model of the corporate environment. Smell o' Clock In the "24 Hours in the Life of a Swiss Cuckoo Clock" exhibit by HEAD—Geneve, students each reinterpreted the classic cuckoo clock form. In this design by matali crasset, the machine emits an essential oil made from plants gathered from a forest in Vienne, France at the beginning of spring when cuckoos are known to appear. 70 of 94

Brick and Sand Oven by Pieter Städler of Design Academy Eindhoven Eindhoven's student show entitled "Touch Base" focused on creating objects that reconnect us with a real sense of tactility within our digitally saturated world. "Care for Milk" Dairy Glazes by Ekaterina Semenova of Design Academy Eindhoven Semenova experimented with the possibility of using milk as a ceramic glaze; after her experiments, she discovered not only that milk works to make ceramic highly waterproof, but also results in interesting visual aftereffects. "Solid" by Erez Nevi Pana of Design Academy Eindhoven "Solid' is a new material made out of soil, fungi, sugar and other natural materials, which can be used to make imperfect yet expressive forms. Fat Cabinet by Anne Tonsmann of HfG Karlsruhe Tonsmann's Fat Cabinet was inspired by the Finnish photographer Iiu Susiraja's self-portraits where she poses with various objects attached to or wedged between parts of her body. Yurt Market 800 by Max Guderian and Clemens Lauer of HfG Karlsruhe Guderian and Lauer redesigned the ubiquitous plastic Monobloc lawn chair. By shortening the seat, the chair takes on a more elegant silhouette and becomes uncomfortable, calling the users attention to the perils of mass manufacturing. LinYee Yuan 91 of 94

Jay's standing desk upholstered in cowhide and inspired by the evolution of the soft-to-hard tissue rations of stick insects in Ernst Haeckel's Generelle Morphologie der Organismen. An impressive characteristic of the student exhibitions at this year's Milan Design Week were their sheer ambitiousness: with projects that went far beyond the normal fare, topics ranged from creating plastics out of completely natural sources to imagining how to satisfy our meat craving in a speculative post-meat world (hint: it involves seaweed). Some students decided to tackle more aesthetic and conceptual concerns while others turned to more political spheres to investigate just how far design can help to improve in areas of sustainability or even humanitarian efforts. The overall results were not only elegant, but also thought-provoking and inviting even for those not normally engaged in design-centric conversation circles.
