Every page of this massive, 443-page work features a description and a photo of something marvelous or startlingly innovative - things you look at and think, "Wow. That's clever! Why didn't somebody think of that before?"... One would expect no less from Core77, the New York-based organization and design site that has done so much to build community and evangelize design since its founding more than 18 years ago.
Linda Tischler, Senior Editor, Fast CompanyDesign is becoming the most up-to-date non-community, a continuously mutating cloud of exchanges based on the task at hand, ingenious and entrepreneurial, generous and socially motivated... designers are becoming so wise and powerful, they are well on the way to becoming the moral, intellectual and pragmatic pillars of society.
Paola AntonelliI think that getting to the difference between design and designer is going to be a big theme moving forward for the next five to ten years. There's a huge cultural gap between traditional systems of value and the role of creativity and experimentation. And I think design is very fortunate to be right at that intersection and have a fairly nice space to play, there.
Robert FabricantI think that the sensibility of the Core77 awards program as something that can accept failure and keep a kind of argumentative, speculative atmosphere to it is a really important thing. One of the best ways to teach ourselves and improve as designers is to look at why something didn't work.
Zoe CoombesDesigning Here/Now is an experiential book that drills through the veneer of today's design practices, enabling the reader to understand integral decisions that are often kept under wraps.
Steven Heller - co-chair SVA MFA Design, Designer as Author + EntrepreneurDesigning Here/Now proves how the ever-present lens of Core77's design industry observation can be best captured in a thoughtfully edited, printed book. Such a grand scope of content would otherwise choke a kindle.
John Maeda - Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield ByersDesigning Here/Now is an optimistic and intelligent review of the state of design today. A multifaceted body of work that will inspire you to get to grips with your own delicious design problem.
Tim Brown - IDEOThere are only two books I keep on my desk at all times: The Chicago Manual of Style and now Designing Here/Now. In order to write and design with style, grace, and a sense of the canon, I will keep them there for years to come.
Liz Danzico - Creative Director, NPRLeave it to Core77, one of the original critical voices to break through the internet clutter of eye candy, to provide us with this beautiful reminder that we can (and will) do better when it comes to designing products and ideas that can transform everyday life.
Alissa Walker - Urbanism Editor, GizmodoThere's something inexplicably satisfying about a glossy, heavy design publication - the knowledge that it is just waiting for you to glean from it, the rewarding thud as you plop it down - and this new one from Thames & Hudson, Designing Here/Now, is an especially good example. The book contains an impressive survey of the most innovative design objects invented over the past five years, providing an insight into design via the Core77 Design Awards. Lovely stuff.
Maisie Skidmore - itsnicethat.comAnother book born of a website, this time the eye-candy driven design fest that is Core77.com. Assembled by the site's founders, Designing Here/Now snatches the fleeting glimpses of the future from the transient online realm and places them firmly and permanently within hard covers. In the process, what seems improbable and fanciful is given room to breathe, and we're given more time to connect with the ideas and marvel at their creativity. Technology marches on, but sometimes it's good to give ideas more space to help them make the leap from virtual to physical.
Jonathan Bell - wallpaper.comis driven by the imagination,
experiments and challenges found here.
