The Unusual Personal Transportation Designs of Shane Chen

Shane Chen is a Washington-based inventor obsessed with moving the human body. His company, Inventist, has been developing strange-looking personal transportation devices for nearly a decade. We took a brief look at his Solowheel a few years ago, and it finally went on sale just last year. Check it out:

For those looking to burn some calories, Inventist's Orbit Wheel is user-powered:

Then there's Chen's human-powered hydrofoil, the AquaSkipper, from way back in '06:

Now Chen is at it again with the Hovertrax, an incredibly small two-wheeled device designed to be even easier to ride than the Solowheel.

Though there's still a month and a half left to pledge, the Hovertrax has already been successfully Kickstarted. While it's expected to retail for a cool grand when it launches in September, Kickstarter pledgers can get in for $695.

The Aquaskipper has 5 patents in Shane Chen's name (patent No.7434530, 7802534, 7819074, 7021232 and 6468118). Pumpabike has none. That speaks for itself.

All I can say is that he should have called his "Fizzsaver" the "Fizzle" instead, and then land a celebrity endorsement from Snoop Dogg. It's all about marketing.

The only problem with this post is that Chen didn't design all of them. I happen to know the inventor of the "aquaskipper" and he started development in 1993 and it was ready for market in 2003. He then presented this idea to some Chinese companies to have it produced. And here we are. Sorry to taint this post but this is the world we live in. http://www.pumpabike.com/company
