Technologizer's amusing article covering "Fifteen Classic Game Console Design Mistakes" looks back at a time when game controllers were still being figured out. Some, like Mattel's Intellivision from 1979, were clearly designed by graphics people with no thought given to function or ergonomics; others, like Nintendo's Virtual Boy from 1995, simply demanded too much of the user (see patent drawing, above). Even the original X-Box from 2001 comes under fire, for having a controller that you definitely didn't want to drop on your foot.
