Here, via NOWNESS, is a neat little video portrait of the inimitable Tom Dixon talking shop—specifically, how welding was his launchpad into design. Indeed, the acetylene torch is a veritable metallurgical wand, and here the British designer marvels at its simple efficacy, poodle in tow. "And then suddenly you've got this tiny world that you can control."

As for his definition of design? "For me, it's really, probably just about improving things."

I hope Tom Dixon has been misquoted in his definition of design, because I can't think of anything that he's improved (taken in a literal sense). He has restyled plenty of chairs, lights and a watch with a face that's difficult to read, but looking through his back catalogue I'm struggling to see how any of his designs were improvements on what has gone before. I know it's empty words for the purposes of media attention, but this is not practising what you preach. It's a shame that designers don't feel that they can say words to the effect of.. I just make stuff look my version of pretty and style what already exists in another guise to drive sales, which in this instance I feel is far closer to the truth. PT
